Cute Zoo was inspired by a collection of cute animal paintings my daughter made for her baby cousin. I loved her little creations so much that I decided to recreate them using overlay mosaic crochet.

With 9 different animal designs to choose from, you can mix and match your favourites to create a unique baby blanket, a larger blanket for a child, or even a matching cushion cover.

Make it your own

All 9 animal designs are the same size, measuring 65 stitches × 71 rows, making them easy to combine in any order you like.

• Baby blanket: Combine any 4 animal patterns to create a blanket measuring 13 stitches × 142 rows

• Larger child’s blanket: Add more animal patterns to create a bigger blanket.

• Matching cushion: Use a single animal pattern to make a cute pillow or cushion cover.

The pattern is written to make choosing and arranging your animals simple. Each animal is colour-coded in the written instructions, making it easy to identify the design you are working on.

All designs are symmetrical and suitable for left-handed crocheters, with the exception of the elephant pattern - the trunk will appear on the opposite side.

Skill level

This pattern uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique and is suitable for beginners who are familiar with basic crochet stitches.

Terminology used:

• DC = Double crochet

• SC = Single crochet

• Bst. = Border stitch

Yarn requirements

For a 4-pattern baby blanket, including the border, using light DK-weight yarn:

• Colour A – Background: Approximately 624 metres / 681 yards (3 × 100 g balls).

• Colour B – Pattern: Approximately 560 metres / 612 yards (2 × 100 g balls).

Yarn used: 280 metres / 307 yards per 100 g ball.

Finished size will depend on your yarn, hook size and individual tension. The suggested size for the 4-pattern blanket is approximately 80 cm wide × 90 cm long.
